Course content ( maximum 700 characters) The course centers upon the question “What is that to be a human?” within the philosophical context of the Western and other cultural traditions. It draws on both historic and systematic approaches to the philosophical problematic associated with human nature and aims at its critical determination. We will discuss notions like human freedom, consciousness, cognition, as well as the origin and significance of life. Basic concepts of metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, and metaphilosophy will be introduced. The emphasis will be on the reflective class discussion drawing on as many viewpoints as possible. Students are expected to gain insight into the philosophical aspects of human nature, and subsequently to be able to address the issues under consideration in a philosophically competent manner.
