|The aim of the course unit Women in Medieval Europe is to acquaint the students with the legal and social status of medieval women. The course elucidates the reasons for the contradictory attitude towards women’s nature among clergy and laity and traces the changes in the concept of woman’s place in the political, economic and cultural life of the medieval society. The students will get an idea about women’s specific role in marriage and family and in society’s religious life, and about the everyday life of women belonging to different medieval estates, and the contribution of women to medieval European culture.
