Course content ( maximum 700 characters) The course focuses on the main aspects of the Byzantine civilization, including political history, religion and confessions, law, social and cultural aspects, literature and art. The Christianization along with the development of the (Orthodox) Christianity as a doctrine and also as organization of the Church will be specially discussed. Chronologically, the course will start with the Late Antiquity and the transformation of the Roman and Hellenistic world. Secondly, the period of medieval existence of the Empire will be scrutinized with special focus on specific Byzantine phenomena, like Iconoclasm. Finally, the Byzantine inheritance in Europe and the Middle East will be clarified and discussed.
